Spay & Neuter

Why Spay or Neuter?

Health Benefits
Spaying or neutering can reduce or eliminate the risk of certain cancers and infections, including uterine infections and testicular cancer.
Behavioral Improvements
These procedures can help reduce unwanted behaviors such as spraying, marking, roaming, aggression, and excessive barking or howling.
Preventing Unplanned Litters
Millions of unwanted animals end up in shelters each year. Spaying and neutering help control the pet population and reduce strain on local shelters.

When Should You Spay or Neuter?

We typically recommend spaying or neutering between 4–6 months of age, but adult pets can also safely undergo the procedure. We’ll work with you to determine the best time based on your pet’s breed, age, and overall health.

Spay/Neuter Guidelines

Current recommendations for spaying and neutering dogs have changed significantly from the past. Instead of early-age procedures, research now shows that waiting longer can support better overall health and development.

  • Females: It is recommended to wait until your dog has gone through at least two heat cycles before spaying. This allows her hormones to fully develop, which can help reduce the risk of certain orthopedic issues and some long-term health concerns.
  • Males: For male dogs, waiting until 18 months to 2 years of age is often advised, as this timing supports proper bone, muscle, and joint development. In some cases, neutering may not be necessary at all unless there are behavioral or medical reasons.

Every dog is unique, so it’s best to discuss the right timing for your pet with your veterinarian to ensure the healthiest outcome.
